Eagles OC Kellen Moore favorite to win Cowboys head coaching job

When the news was published that Dallas Cowboys officially went to say goodbye to Mike McCarthy after failing to agree to a new deal with the Super Bowl-winning coach, fans immediately began hypothesizing which coach could lead “America’s Team” next.
Deion Sanders? Those whispers grew into an incredible roar with a several tweets from NFL pundits. Legendary tight end Jason Witten? That’s obviously an option, since he was a force in the high school ranks.
But one name brought up by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter is one that Cowboys fans know well, as he went from being their backup quarterback to being a leader Philadelphia Eagles to a 2-0 record against Big D 2024: Kellen Moore.
That’s right, when discussing Dallas’ options ahead of Monday Night Football’s wild card round, NFL Insider noted that Moore will be the name to follow his impressive run in Philly and his connection to the franchise.

“Obviously it’s just new, it’s just getting started, we’ll see where it takes them.” A lot of names are floating around,” Schefter said, via SI. “I think over time they could be interested in Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.” Potentially maybe Jason Witten, the franchise’s all-time great, but this is very early, very preliminary. And we’ll see where Jerry Jones ends up going with this search, but the Cowboys are now in the market for a new head coach.
For God’s sake, between Sanders, Moore and Witten, is Jones only considering the candidates he already has in his phone? Or does familiarity mean something to the 82-year-old agent, who has been stuck in the NFL’s no-man’s land longer than many of his players have been alive? In any case, while Sanders and Witten are unconventional options to say the least, Moore is at least a current NFL coach who has received other interview requests from head coaches, including the New Orleans Saints.
Does Moore make sense in Dallas? It depends; The team let Moore go once before, in 2023 before landing with the Los Angeles Chargers, and he certainly has some explaining to do with the Eagles’ unique offense, having overseen a team that ranks near the bottom of the NFL in passing attempts and has a generational talent in Saquon Barkley leading the rush the game. Still, given that he’s been able to work with a number of different coaches and has tweaked the offense in each scheme, perhaps he could be the one to take Dak Prescott to the next level, as if anyone knows what the Pro Bowler likes and dislikes, it’s his backup quarterback from Boise State.
