Eddie George is interviewing for an open job with the Chicago Bears



In a a shocking twist in the Chicago Bears’ search for their next coachTennessee State coach Eddie George is interviewing with the team for the open job on Sunday, according to the report by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

“The Chicago Bears, who I know Ben Johnson is on their roster, here’s a surprise candidate they’re interviewing tomorrow. That guy, Eddie George – how about that – has been the head coach at Tennessee State for the last four years. The coach of the year in his conference, he won his conference. They’re going to interview him tomorrow morning,” Glazer told Fox on Saturday before the Commanders’ game against the Lions.

Eddie George completed his fourth season as the head coach of the Tennessee State Tigers, taking over the position in 2021. Since taking the helm of Tennessee State football, Eddie George has transformed the program into a powerhouse. George and the Tigers have experienced their share of struggles, going 5-6 in 2021 and 4-7 in 2022.

The team then went 6-5 in 2023, posting their first winning season since 2017. This year’s team made history as they finished 9-4, earned a share of the Big South-OVC Championship and earned a bid to the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2013. He ended up losing in a competitive match against Montana.

At the end of the season, George has expressed his desire to remain in the state of Tennessee for the next few years, according to a quote obtained by The Tennesseean.

“This is part of the process. God willing, if I’m here for the next five or six years, it’s going to take time for us to become an elite program where we’re consistent and sustainable.”

George has ties to the Bears, having worked out with the team during their 2023 OTAs.

“Being relatively new to coaching, I am able to participate in many different meetings from medical to equipment to physical training, staff meetings, appointments, surgeries; the whole spectrum of business and understand it from that perspective, as well as game planning and on-field stuff. “It was great in that capacity,” he said per quote on the Chicago Bears website.

Medvedi confirmed that they have interviewed 14 candidates so far. They include former Titans coach Mike Vrabel, now head coach of the New England Patriots, and former Titans offensive coordinator and Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith. Other candidates include Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, former Cowboys and Packers coach Mike McCarthy and former Carolina Panthers and Washington coach Ron Rivera.
