Egor Demin’s workload plan revealed after rookie returns from injury

Brooklyn Nets newcomer Yegor Demin missed most of the preseason with a plantar fascia tear. However, after returning to Friday’s preseason finale in Toronto, the No. 8 pick is available for Wednesday’s regular-season opener against the Charlotte Hornets.

Demin played 19 minutes against the Raptors, posting 14 points, five rebounds and one assist on 3-of-5 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 from three and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. While Demin’s return to the court is a welcome sign for Nets fans, Jordi Fernandez has tempered expectations of the rookie’s workload as he works his way back from a foot ailment.

“I’m not sure how many minutes (he’ll play). … Like players who don’t perform at the same level as others (due to injury), his overall volume is usually not the same as others. I can’t give you an exact number, but we have to be careful. We’ll give him the proper upgrade. That’s very important for us,” Fernandez said.

Demin’s plantar fascia tear occurred some time after his three Summer League appearances in late July.

The Russian floor general said at the media day that the injury “wasn’t a big deal.” However, after his NBA debut in Toronto, he admitted that it was something he and the Nets team will have to monitor the performance.

“It’s going to take a while to really get rid of everything,” Demin told the New York Post’s Brian Lewis. “But as long as it’s not (dangerous), as long as it’s safe for me to play, I’m ready to go.”

It remains to be seen if Demin will start Wednesday’s regular season opener. Fellow rookies Ben Saraf and Nolan Traore have competed for Brooklyn’s starting point guards during his absence. Saraf significantly outplayed Traore and is the favorite to share reps with Demina to start the season.
