Eric Bienimi breaks his silence on leaving the Bears to return to Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs are officially aiming to recapture their championship magic by bringing back a familiar face. After suffering through the worst season of the Patrick Mahomes era, reports from NFL Network insider Tom Pellicer confirm that Eric Bniemi was hired as offensive coordinator. This reunion puts Bieniemi back on the sidelines where he helped secure two Super Bowl titles against the 49ers and Eagles.
His return comes after a stint as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, where the unit ranked 21st, followed by a difficult stint at UCLA, where the offense fell to 117th in total yards.
He recently worked with the running back for the Chicago Bears, but the allure of Kansas City proved too strong to ignore.
Breaking his silence on the move, Bieniemi spoke candidly about the emotional weight of his choice. According to Nate Taylor, admitted the coordinator it was “a real, really hard decision” to leave his position with the Bears.
however, the excitement of the reunion prevailedand Bieniemi declared that he was “fired up for this opportunity”. He expressed that merger Andy Reid and Mahomes felt like he was coming home.
As for the product on the field, especially the running game, Bieniemi emphasized a pragmatic approach. He acknowledged that he is exposed to various schemes, but stressed the importance of identifying and implementing exactly what current staff do best.
This move signals a change of guard, as Andy Reid has been brutally honest about Matt Nagy’s departure. Reid confirmed that despite the separation, the two remain on excellent terms. He admitted outsiders might question the decision, but insisted he knew Nagy wanted a chance to host his own show again.
Reid passionately defended Nagy’s resume, citing his previous Coach of the Year honors and saying he deserves the head coaching role.
While the offense was solid in 2025 during an MVP-caliber run from Mahomes before his ACL injury, the team ultimately missed the playoffs, leading to this decisive turnaround back in Bieniemi.
