Erik Spoelstra highlights ‘step-up’ of rookie who broke skid against Nets

As it is The Miami Heat snapped a five-game losing streak beat the brooklyn nets on thursday night, 106-95, the team made big contributions, including the presence of a first-round pick from the last nba draft. U Heat’s win over the Netsfans finally got to see rookie Kasparas Yakutsionis play significant minutes, catching the head coach’s attention Erik Spoelstra.

It wouldn’t be Yakutsionis’ NBA debut, as he entered Miami near the end of a huge win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Dec. 1. However, it was the first time he had played back-to-back when Spoelstra called him with 4:20 left in the first quarter.

It didn’t take long for the 19-year-old to make an impact, scored his first NBA regular season field goal, which was a triplet. While Yakutsionis played just eight minutes the entire game, recording three points with an assist, Spoelstra spoke on “good boost” he gave.

“I thought he gave us a good boost,” Spoelstra said, via Heat Central video on X, formerly Twitter. “You know, guys, we’re down right now, and (Jakucionis) gives us energy, competitiveness. He makes things happen. You know, he’s gotten a lot better, a lot more comfortable with what we’re trying to do. I thought those minutes were good. You know, we missed some shots while he was in that unit. But I thought it was a pretty solid process in that unit.”

With Heat dealing with injuries like Tyler Hero, Nikola Jovic and Pele Larsson, seeing Yakutsionis play significant minutes could be a recurring event, giving the team a point guard Spoelstra can play with. For the impact he made, he was given a game ballgiven to him by fellow Miami youth player Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Yakutsionis was the 20th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, who could fill a need the team has lacked for some time, which is a playmaking point guard, even though Davion Mitchell is in the midst of an impressive season. Speaking of his outing, Yakutsionis I would say that it is the most important area was winning and skating.

“So I feel good,” Yakutsionis said, via video from HeatCulture on X. “You know, the most important thing is that we won after a long losing streak. That was the most important thing for today. We’re all focused on winning tonight, and I think it’s a good way to start building everything.”

The Illinois product would say he got “little hints” before the game that he might play Thursday, but it was pretty much the same message he and other young players are getting, which is to stay ready so you don’t have to.

“I try to always be ready and do what I can, control what I can control,” Yakutsionis said.

Either way, the rookie looks to get more playing time as Miami continues its road trip Friday night against the Boston Celtics and Sunday against the New York Knicks.
