Erik Spoelstra reveals ‘great opportunity’ ahead of Miami

Rewind to The Miami Heat beat the New Orleans Pelicans 125-106 On January 4, where is the star Norman Powell said how crucial the upcoming trip to the Midwest will be. With Heat works through its own processwhat would result on the road was a three-game losing streak, ending with a 124-112 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but head coach Erik Spoelstra gives some hope for the immediate future.

Looking back on last week, Miami dropped Game 1 to the Minnesota Timberwolves, despite Tyler Herro‘s comeback, posting its second-lowest total of the season with 94 points. Then Thursday’s game against the Chicago Bulls would be postponed, leading to Saturday’s horrible loss to the lowly Indiana Pacers, and while they played better against the Thunder, they still lost.

With a three-game homestand starting Tuesday against the Phoenix Suns, Spoelstra is calling it quits “a great opportunity.” Playmaker Davion Mitchell would also emphasize not taking certain teams “goodbye.”

“We know we have a very important week,” Spoelstra said. “This trip didn’t go the way we wanted, due to a lot of different factors, but we have a great opportunity this week at home, three good competitive opponents. We’ll rest tomorrow and get ready for a big game on Tuesday against Phoenix.”

“If we had played the way we did tonight against Indiana, we would have won,” Mitchell said after his 13-point, 10-assist performance against Oklahoma City, via video from Heat Culture on X, formerly Twitter. “I think we took them for granted, even starting in the shootout. … We weren’t ready, so I think we have to take every team like OKC, play really hard and come up with our rules.”

The Heat must be mentally tougher, Erik Spoelstra believes

With The Heat continue to work through injury issues, despite Herro returning, now Powell appears on the injury report; the team is still going through growing pains in its composition. It was an adjustment when Miami was fully healthy, especially as far as Hero was concerned, but it was a more positive outing in Oklahoma City, which led 59-55 at halftime.

However, it would be the second half where the Thunder took control, led by a 39-point third period to Miami’s 26 as the team failed to recover. Spoelstra would also stress the need for heat to be mentally tougher.

“We just have to be more all-around, like, it’s not just physical toughness,” Spoelstra said. “I felt like we brought physical toughness, but mental toughness when … the momentum starts to swing the other way.”

“And we really had some tough turnovers when they started running, and that absolutely got their energy going, got the crowd going,” Spoelstra continued. “We didn’t react well to that, we’ll get better. We’ll get better at it, hopefully we’ll be in many more close games like this where we’ll be able to collectively feel that emotion and respond in a better way.”

The Heat are now 20-19, which puts them in eighth place in the Eastern Conference entering the playoffs that begin Tuesday night against the Suns. It continues on Thursday as they host the Boston Celtics and on Saturday against the Thunder once again.
