Erik Spoelstra reveals how impressive rookie makes Miami ‘more dynamic’

There’s no doubt that Yakutsionis, who was selected 20th overall in the 2025 NBA draft, has impressed Spoelstra and the team is impressed with his work ethic, even if some of it is not approved.

“He’s relentless in his approach, and I think that’s super unique for a teenager, how ambitious he is and how relentless he is with his work ethic, watching film, coming back, getting extra practice. He’s one of those guys that you have to tell him, ‘No, you’ve already practiced three times today,’ and he’s going to ignore us,” Spoelstra said.

“Even in these games where he’s starting to play more minutes, he’s still going to go out there after the game and do a 45-minute practice, which (assistant coach) Chris Quinn didn’t approve of. … But it’s nice to see him, you know, get an opportunity and then be ready for that opportunity,” Spoelstra continued.

Erik Spoelstra on Kasparas Yakutsionis making Heat ‘dynamic’

It wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine for the keeper, like Money in Yakutsionis has dropped several times for the G League play, but that is typical for a young player, especially one who is a teenager. As the Illinois product looks consistent, he appears to be on his way as he was announced as the starter for Saturday’s game against the Thunder, as Spoelstra said how “dynamic” he can make Miami.

“Who knows what’s going to happen in the second half of the season, but I like his minutes when he’s out there because he makes things happen,” Spoelstra said. “I thought he was really good the other night against a quality team, and he wasn’t afraid of the moment in the fourth quarter…he’s not afraid, and we’ll definitely build on that, because he can do some things on offense that I think make us a little bit more dynamic.”

Yakutsionis would receive praise Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herrosaying how he is a “bright future” and is a “hard worker”, so there’s no denying the support he has in the dressing room. If there is one player out of many for the novice to observe carefully, it’s the team’s starting point guard Mitchell, who is a vital piece for the Heat.

“I definitely watch him a lot in practice and how he approaches the defensive end, how aggressive he is, how he plays for others. I’m just trying to learn from him, for sure,” Yakutsionis told ClutchPoints.

Either way, Yakutsionis is looking to carve out a prominent role for Miami, whether it’s starting or coming off the bench, as the team embarks on a five-game road trip after Saturday’s game against the Thunder.
