Erik Spoelstra’s “Grateful” Tribute After Reaching 800 Wins

MIAMI – With The Miami Heat finally have a fully healthy roster in a 106-103 victory, the team’s sixth straight, over the Milwaukee Bucks in the second game of the NBA Cup bracket, the victory meant more to the head coach Erik Spoelstra. Victory on Wednesday marked his 800th as a Heat head coach, a milestone Spoelstra didn’t even know he had reached.

After the win, Spoelstra would head to the locker room to be swarmed by players throwing water at him, asking: “For what?” Then he would understand after the team told him about the historic feat, as he is the 17th coach to reach those heights, and the third coach ever to do so with one team, joining Gregg Popovich and Jerry Sloan.

“I was very confused,” Spoelstra said. “Calculating we might have qualified for the cup. And then I look around like nobody else is pouring water on them.”

While it is The Heat are impressive with their new offenseespecially with Tyler Herro and others returning to the lineup, that’s an example of what Spoelstra was willing to do to win basketball games. Since taking over as head coach in 2008, Spoelstra has cemented himself as one of the all-time greats, with many more years to add to his legacy.

Spoelstra would go on to say that the moment didn’t hit him, but thought it appropriate that the game in which he got his 800th win came the day before Thanksgiving. That would lead to Spoelstra reminiscing about last offseason and the brotherhood of the coaching staff and players.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet, because I wasn’t aware of it,” Spoelstra said. “I guess it’s fitting that it comes right before Thanksgiving, right? Like, I feel incredible gratitude for this organization and all these years… I’m having a hell of a time. You know, I love what I do. I love coaching, I love this profession, I love working for this organization, I love working for and I’ve known you for so many years, but we’re too old, we’re too old, we have too much of an amazing relationship, our coaching staff right now, it’s just fun.”

“After that loss and/or the playoff series loss to Cleveland, you know, we all took a bunch of time off, and then we got to work,” Spoelstra continued. “And it’s been one of the most satisfying summers, really settling down and trying to figure out how we can get better. But it’s really like a brotherhood, our coaching staff, the players, it’s just a fun locker room, a very ambitious locker room.”

Heat’s Tyler Hero on Erik Spoelstra reaches milestone

With Spoelstra feeling a range of emotions, there’s no denying that he’ll quickly regain focus on the season and continue to improve the team after back-to-back games in which the offense has declined. Still finding ways to win at the end, aided by Hero’s 24 and 29 points in back-to-back games, the team will go back to the drawing board to regain their early success.

Hero would talk about Spoelstra reaching 800 wins, as the star point guard has been with the coach since being drafted in the first round in 2019, resulting in a portion of the wins. Herro would talk about Spoelstra be one of the bestwhile he had the same luxury at the college level, while at Kentucky with John Calipari.

“Trying to think back to how old I was when (Spoelstra) probably got his first one, to be where he is now and to have 800 is crazy,” Hero said. “For me, just being a player, being coached by one of the best coaches ever at the college level and then obviously, now at the NBA level, soaking it all in. It’s just a great opportunity and experience for me to be coached by Spo.”

For Spoelstra, he would go back to what Pat Riley told him when he first got the job to be Miami’s head coach:

“When Pat (Riley) told me I was going to be a head coach, he said I would blink and it would be 10 years (that),” Spoelstra said. “That’s how I feel. I feel very grateful on the way to Thanksgiving.”

The Heat are now 13-6 and get a two-day break before Saturday’s game against the Detroit Pistons.
