Erik Spoelstra’s honest assessment of the Heat’s journey without Jimmy Butler

Looking at the specific game, Miami would lead Los Angeles by double digits at halftime as some were getting deja vu when The Heat beat the Lakers at home with an incredible 41 points at the beginning of December. However, the offensive production went off the cliff in the second half as the amount of turnovers made the difference.

The team would finish with 20 turnovers compared to Los Angeles’ six turnovers, but more importantly, they would concede 23 points off those turnovers, which ended up being game-breaking for them. Spoelstra would echo the same sentiments in his postgame press conference saying it was “the difference” and even expected the game to be worse.

“I think some of it was our doing, and it was costly,” Spoelstra said of the losses. “This was supposed to be a possession game.” That really was the difference. This game was supposed to be in the low 100s for both teams. But they got some easy ones off of those turnovers and that got them into a little bit more rhythm to be able to be more effective against our zone.

If there was a bright side to the loss, it was once again another impressive outing for Heat’s All-Star hope in Tyler Herro who finished with 34 points, scored at least 30 for the third straight game, shooting 12 of 18 from the field. He hit seven 3-pointers in 12 attempts, and also recorded four rebounds and three assists, although he had seven turnovers of his own.

“We just have to learn ways to win, myself included,” Hero said.

“I’m just trying to take what the defense gives me,” Herro said of his offensive production over the last three games and this season. “Open shots, they overreact to different things and just take advantage of what they give me.”

The loss against the Lakers also marked the first game back Bam Adebayo missed the cross Clippers game with a lower back contusion. He suffered the injury in last Saturday’s win over the Portland Trail Blazers after a bad fall on his back sidelined him for the first time this season.

“A lot of treatment,” Adebayo said of what helped him bounce back from the one-game absence.

He would finish with 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting, along with four rebounds and five assists in another offensive outing for the Heat captain.

Either way, Miami is now 20-19, which puts them in ninth place in the Eastern Conference as they return home to host the Denver Nuggets. It is the first competition for Butler served a seven-game suspensionbut it remains to be seen what path the team will take to stardom in terms of game availability.
