Erik Spoelstra’s love/hate relationship with a key part of the defense

MIAMI – The The Miami Heat’s win over the Houston Rockets last Saturday showed an area where the team flourished. It’s not uncommon to see Miami run a zone defense against opponents this season. In fact, the Heat have taken advantage of it to the point where they’ve led the NBA in zone possessions the last three seasons. They are on pace to do it for the fourth straight time, as they logged 575 possessions in the zone against the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday, using it the most in Saturday’s big win over the Rockets.

Spoelstra talked about how there are times he “hates” zone defenses because of the lack of individual accountability that is taken away compared to man-on-man. The head coach would stress to ClutchPoints that the zone is a key part of the defense, saying the “hate” comment was made more in “is” because of his mentor’s thoughts, in relation to Pat Riley.

“It’s in our defensive system, year in and year out, regardless of what we think about it. I’m above that. I just said that jokingly, just because I was a mentor. You know, I believe at one point he said, ‘We’re never going to be a zone organization,’ but the league is a lot different than it was 20 years ago. We’re all at a level to shoot, we’re all trying to get to the space level, everything we’re trying to achieve. you just try to be as tough as possible compared to other teams, and our best version defensively is a really tight group.

Heat’s Erik Spoelstra on zone defense: ‘There are times I hate it’

Hothead captain Bam Adebayo and young center Kel’el Ware were instrumental in slowing down Houston and its size in the zone defense, which led to the defense’s success. The defense wasn’t just impressive in one game, because Miami is fourth in the league in defensive rating (111.5).

Going back to Spoelstra’s original comments, he talked about zone defense after practice on Monday, giving an insight into the times when he ‘hated’ him.

“There are times when I hate it,” Spoelstra said after Monday’s practice, despite the success of the zone defense. “Because sometimes there’s no definite accountability. And sometimes you have the mindset that the zone is going to get you out of hand, or you don’t have to work as hard. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We actually have to burn more calories in the zone than we do in man. And there’s a lot of different movements that happen. But that’s just part of our system. That’s the defensive part. our fastball is our man-to-man defense when we’re at our best.”

Either way, the Heat will continue to use him for the rest of the season, as the team went 32-29 heading into Tuesday’s game against the Nets, putting them in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. After Tuesday, the team faces the Nets again on Thursday, ending the week with a home game against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night.
