Erik Spoelstra’s ‘tough’ admission about Miami cutting Precious Achiuva
As it is The Miami Heat surprisingly waived Preshas Achiuwa before Wednesday’s opener against the Orlando Magic, it was one of the cuts made to get to the maximum number of players before the start of the regular season. While it is The Heat went winless in the preseason, looking to turn the tide in the regular season, the head coach Erik Spoelstra talked about the recent cuts.
In addition to Achiuwa, Miami released Ethan Thompson, Dain Dainja, Bez Mbenga and moved Jahmir Young to get the final two-way deal. Achiuva’s cut is no doubt a shocking move to some as he was Miami’s former first-round pick in 2020, and after spending just one season together, Spoelstra and the forward expressed a challenge to regroup and improve.
With Achiuva’s contract non-guaranteed, Miami has made a financial decision to cut their losses now that they are under the luxury tax threshold with this move. Spoelstra said after Sunday’s practice that the team that released Achiuva “difficult” because of history.
“It’s tough, especially because we spent time with him four years ago, it felt like we wanted to continue that. But that’s just where we are right now with the roster. We’ll have to see what happens in the future,” Spoelstra said, via Heat Diehards on X, formerly Twitter.

Heat’s Erik Spoelstra on cuts being ‘tough’

With The heat of preparations for the start of the seasonthere’s no denying that some fans were excited to see Achiuva back in Miami, even though the preseason was limited. Especially in the last preseason game in which Miami lost to the Memphis Grizzlies 141-125, he did not register a single second.
While the news had not yet been released, Spoelstra would repeat his statements even then, that these conversations are always difficult.
“We try to communicate it as much as possible in advance,” Spoelstra said after the loss in Memphis. “It’s always difficult for a player to pull that off, translate in the moment… So I think it’s conveyed better, but it’s always difficult when you have to have those conversations.”
