ESPN’s Spurs trade proposal pairs Anthony Davis with Victor Vembanyama
The The San Antonio Spurs are playing well in short supply Victor Vembanyama so far this season, recently picking up a road win over the Los Angeles Lakers in the knockout stage of the NBA Cup for placement in Las Vegas. Players like Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox have stepped up in the big man’s absence, but that may not stop the team from looking for more talent to surround him with.
Recently, ESPN ppresented a business idea that would see Wembanjama team up with the Dallas Mavericks winger Anthony Davis. In the deal, the Spurs would get Davis, the Mavericks would get Harrison Barnes, Luke Cornett, Keldon Johnson and multiple second-round picks, and the Chicago Bulls would get Najib Marshall.
“A deal with San Antonio would provide the Mavericks with the biggest financial benefit. The Spurs don’t have to recoup as much salary as Davis makes because they have cap space under the luxury tax, and the depth they would provide Dallas allows the undercard to send Marshall to Chicago — where he could start small — for a second-round pick,” noted ESPN.
Overall, if the Spurs were able to land Davis without parting with any of their young core or future first-round picks, they would certainly be tempted to do so. Vembanjama and Davis would make for the most feared defensive duo in NBA history, and would also give the team another strength on offense as well as someone who can create their own shot.
As ESPN noted, the main motivation for Dallas in this deal would be financial reasons, as they want to have a clean slate going forward as they aim to build around Cooper Flagg.
Overall, if this trade goes down, it could spell bad news for the rest of the Western Conference.
