Fans celebrate Keegan Murray’s return after a comeback win against the Timberwolves

On Monday night, it looked like The Sacramento Kings were returning to their standard operating procedure of double-digit losses against teams with playoff aspirations. They had a huge win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, but as the old saying goes, even a blind squirrel can find a nut. But the Kings may be turning a corner, having upset another West playoff team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, with a 117-112 overtime win.

The Kings were already down by 10 and the clock wound down in the fourth after Anthony Edwards made a one-and-one layup. But then Malik Monk went wild and put the Kings in, scoring seven straight points before DeMar DeRozan sent the game into OT with a couple of free throws.

In OT, DeRozan eventually imposed his will, finishing the job Monk started for the Kings en route to another huge win. Although the two carried Sacramento over the finish line, one player was the main constant for the Kings on Monday — the recently returned Keegan Murray.

In just Murray’s third game of the season, he is proving to be a transformative presence for the Kings. He scored 26 points on 10-19 shooting from the field and struggled on the boards, scoring 12 against the Timberwolves’ big frontcourt. The fans then showered him with love now that Sacramento made it 2-1 back with him in action.

“Keegan Murray was really impressive tonight. The man is maturing and becoming a complete player,” X user @khaled74 wrote.

“Keegan Murray was a big (different) creator for the Kings defensively for sure – he guarded both Ant and Julius and did a great job on both,” @DietBeginsMon further.

“So Keegan Murray turned the Kings season around with his return, eh?” @TraMurr he added.

Do the Kings come up with something?

This Kings team is not without talent. Just fitting in among their best players is awkward at best. But head coach Doug Christie seems to be on to something.

Murray’s return made things easier for Christie and the Kings because now they can play with some size without sacrificing tons of shooting and defense. But surely Monk’s performance on Monday convinced Christie that he is at least worthy of a bigger role in the rotation than Dennis Schroeder.
