Fires in Los Angeles: Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Kings postpone NBA and NHL games
The Los Angeles Lakers postponed their NBA game against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday due to ongoing wildfires in the region.
The NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, who also play at the Cripto.com Arena, postponed their meeting with the Calgary Flames that was scheduled for Thursday at 03:30 GMT.
Los Angeles firefighters are fighting numerous fires in the city suburbs, as almost 180,000 inhabitants were forced to evacuate.
“We are heartbroken for Los Angeles.” the Lakers said in a statement as they wanted to “focus on what’s most important today.”
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this unimaginable situation. And our gratitude goes out to the first responders and all of you who come together when we need each other the most. We’re with you, LA.”
The Lakers were scheduled to host the Hornets on Friday at 03:30 GMT, and the NBA said the date of the postponed game would be announced at a later date.
“The entire NBA family sends their thoughts and support to the Los Angeles community during this challenging time,” the NBA added.
“Our hearts go out to our entire Los Angeles community,” the Kings said in a statement Wednesday.
“We appreciate the hard-working first responders who work diligently to contain fires and protect our communities.”
Meanwhile, basketball star Kawhi Leonard, who plays for the Lakers’ cross-town rival, the LA Clippers, is allegedly, external willing to move away from the team to be with his family after they were evacuated from the area.
However, the NFL franchise Los Angeles Rams announced that their playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings at SoFi Stadium is still expected to be held on Monday.
“The safety of the Los Angeles community is our top priority, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fires in the area,” the Rams added.
“We are grateful for the tireless efforts of first responders who continue to protect our city and community, as well as the individuals who continue to help our neighbors in need.”
In a statement, the league said: “The NFL continues to closely monitor developments in this area and will remain in contact with both clubs and the NFLPA (National Football League Players Association).”
