For the middle finger, Marcus Smart goes on the trot
In his role as a veteran but also as a watchdog, Marcus Smart brings a lot to these Lakers this season. 31-year-old leader he even took his role a little too seriously during the win in Utah, getting angry with the referee just before halftime for a series of decisions that clearly didn’t go his way. The “discussion” degenerated to the point where Marcus Smart gave the referees the middle finger, a miss sanctioned by the NBA$35,000 fine !
Marcus Smart returned to this argument after the game, decrying the numerous whistles and free throws awarded (86!) that marred the game and warmed the mood a bit.
“There were a lot of things, but like I said before, as a defender you don’t have much of an advantage already. So when the attacker can get to you, allow yourself all the contact . . .”he confided. “You have a margin for error, your hands have to be a certain way, and if you deviate from that, it’s a foul. On the other hand, a guy can run into me at full speed with his shoulder, shove me, and nothing whistles. And then, when I go to set up in the post, no run, no force, I’m just walking and the opponent collapses to the bench … 80 free throws, and that’s a lot, so there was a lot of frustration on both sides.
The leader then used this frustration to help Lakers win (143-135), especially scoring three 3-point baskets in the last act.
Finally, we note that this is Marcus Smart’s third technical foul this season. This is also the fourth time in his career that he has been fined $35,000 or more. In April 2017, he already slipped this way by giving a fan the finger and was subsequently fined $25,000.
