Fred VanVleet, assistant de port
Badly injured kneeand probably “out” for the whole season, Fred VanVleet returned to the field on Thursday, and apparently did not train. The former NBA champion is here to play the luxurious assistant to the staff of Ime Udoka.
A victim of a torn ACL, he was giving instructions to his teammates during a pick-and-roll drill, and a notable detail: He wasn’t wearing any visible brace on his right knee.
“It’s like the good old days.” that’s how Amen Thompson reacted. “He gives me advice. I ask him many questions, I watch how he organizes the game.”
Soon with the group on the move
Fred VanVleet was not benched during preseason games or the first game in Oklahoma City, but is expected to follow his teammates soon. According to a source cited by the Houston Chronicle, he could be planning an Oct. 29 trip to Toronto, followed by a Nov. 1 trip to Boston.
In his absence, Amen Thompson fills the role of starting point guard, while young Reed Shepard provides rotation off the bench.
Off the bench and in practice, Fred VanVleet will fully play his role as a mentor to his teammates.
