George Bates has been appointed as the head coach of Great Britain’s wheelchair basketball team


George Bates has been appointed Head Coach and Player Development Coach for the Great Britain Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team.

Bates was a key part of the British side won the 2018 World Cup. their first world gold medal.

It’s 2020 believed that his leg was amputated to continue his international career after being told he could not play the sport due to his disability.

Bates was injured playing football at the age of 11 and has complex regional pain syndrome, a condition that causes persistent severe pain.

The 31-year-old, who coached the Great Britain team at the 2023 and 2025 Invictus Games and led Loughborough Lightning to three Women’s Premier League titles, said being appointed Great Britain coach felt “a bit like a full-circle moment for me”.
