George Lombardo Jr.’s home run has fans making 1 request

The The New York Yankees are currently participating in spring training as they prepare for the 2026 regular season, the Yankees look to bounce back after exiting the ALDS in unusual fashion last year against the eventual AL champion Toronto Blue Jays.

This spring training, Yankees fans are getting a chance to see some of the team’s young prospects for the future, including George Lombardo Jr., the shortstop the team selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft.

Lombard Jr. he wasted no time made his presence known during spring training Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox, crushing a home run off Garrett Croce to give the Yankees an early lead in the top of the first inning.

Fans in the comments section of X, formerly Twitter, were understandably delighted, while also adamant that Lombard Jr. should have taken the Yankees spot at the start Anthony Volpe.

“Cashman is going to let this kid fail in AA while .197 Volpe with one shoulder singlehandedly ruins their season,” one fan wrote, referring to Volpe’s surgery to repair a partially torn left labrum he underwent in October.

“Look how short Lombard is to the ball, outside of an elite pitcher. The man is already more of a pure hitter than Anthony Volpe. Bring him up. idc,” another added.

“Yeah, this is one I’ll be packing myself with Volpe bags,” said another fan.

Of course, Volpe is only 24 years old and played part of last season with a labrum injury, which could explain his relative drop in production.

However, it’s certainly becoming hard to ignore the play of Lombardo Jr., who is only 20 years old and certainly looks ready to participate at the MLB level.

Either way, the Yankees have a few more spring training games before the regular season begins later this month.
