GM Joe Hortiz teases how LA will handle Justin Herbert’s big problem

The Los Angeles Chargers have made the playoffs in three of the last four seasons. However, they do failed to advance beyond the Wild Card round. With the quarterback Justin Herbert available The Chargers have much higher expectations.

Still, general manager Joe Horitz knows Herbert he can’t do everything by himself. That’s why he plans to spend the offseason building the Chargers’ offensive line and pass the receivers, via NFL Fox’s Eric Williams.

“I think (offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel) has some good ideas in terms of how to protect Justin,” Horitz said. “We’re always going to try to help Justin. It’s throwing multiple players at all positions to help the team. We’re going to attack the O-line, we’re going to attack the defense, running backs, tight ends, everything. The more weapons and more players we can put around Justin, the better we protect Justin.”

With both starting matches Rashon Slater and Joe Alt suffered season-ending injuriesThe Chargers are tied for second in sacks allowed with 60. Even when both return in 2026, Los Angeles will have to deal with the interior of the offensive line and any potential backup tackle options.

On the pass-catching side, wide receiver Keenan Allen led the way with 81 receptions for 777 yards and four touchdowns. Ladd McConkey became a reliable weapon, making 66 catches for 789 yards and six touchdowns. Former first-round pick Quentin Johnston found his stride, leading the team with eight receiving touchdowns on 51 catches for 735 yards.

Still, Los Angeles finished the regular season ranked 18th in total passing, averaging 212.2 yards per game.

Herbert under center will give the Chargers a chance on every matchup. But now Los Angeles must find the best way to build around him.
