Governor Landry makes the announcement after Kelly’s firing

in 2025 LSU football the season quickly turned into a disaster. The Tigers are 5-3, but they fired Brian Kelly after falling at home to Texas A&M. The Tigers paid a huge buyout for Brian Kelly, leading to some speculation about whether athletic director Scott Wooward will have much say in who the Tigers hire next.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry held a press conference on Wednesday and told the media that Woodward he wouldn’t hire the next coach at LSU. Instead, Landry said the university’s board of trustees will form a committee to help find a replacement for Brian Kelly. The biggest reason he wouldn’t hire the next coach is the amount of money he owes Brian Kelly.
“No. I can tell you that Scott Woodward is not picking the next coach right now,” Landry said. “Hell, I’d let Donald Trump pick that before I let him. … I don’t know. But the Board of Supervisors will design a committee and get us a coach.”
Landry was even more critical of Woodward and discussed the amount of money Jimbo Fisher was owed after the Aggies fired him.
“We’re not going down the beaten path,” Landry said. “I want to tell you something. This is a pattern. The guy just wrote that the contract cost Texas A&M $70-something million. We’re $53 million committed right now. We’re not doing that again. I believe we’re going to get a great coach. Maybe we’ll let President Trump pick him. He likes winners.
“I’m not going to pick the next coach. But I can promise we’re going to pick a coach and make sure the coach is successful. We’re going to make sure he’s compensated appropriately, and we’re going to put metrics on that, because I’m tired of rewarding failure in this country and then letting the taxpayers foot the bill.”
It’s unusual for a governor to be involved in a football coach’s decision. However, one of the reasons is that LSU does not currently have a university president, and it is the flagship university in Louisiana. Woodward was a key reason Kelly was firedbut will have no role in employment.
