Grayson Allen hit back at the Nets announcer’s infamous Ted Cruz comparison during the game

Despite securing victory for his team on Monday 19.01.2026. Phoenix Suns guard Grayson Allen found himself on the receiving end of a brutal Ted Cruz comparison by Brooklyn Nets broadcaster Tim Capstrove.

Midway through Monday’s gamewhen the Suns were leading the Nets 45-28, an IES Network broadcast showed Allen on television screens early in the second quarter, with Capstrove claiming Allen looked like Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and rejected the infamous comparison.

“Grayson Allen — I can’t look at him and not think of Ted Cruz,” Capstro said. “I’m not Mr. Politics or anything like that. I don’t want to get into that. But that guy, that’s a young Ted Cruz to me.” Ryan Ruocco also chimed in and argued that Capstro’s comparison was “spot on” and went on to note that Sen. Cruz should “feel good” about the comparison.

Cruz himself is aware of the online trend of his striking resemblance to Allen. Back in 2017, he went viral on social media after responding to Deadspin’s question about showing evidence that Cruz plays basketball, to which he responded with a picture of Allen in a Duke Blue Devils uniform.

Despite the infamous comparison, the 30-year-old finished the game on a positive note, scoring 14 points and dishing out eight assists in 30 minutes to help the Suns beat the Nets 126-117. The rest of the match also saw impressive results from other Suns players, including Dillon Brooks, who led the scoreboard with 27 points, while Devin Booker contributed 24. In the opponent, Michael Porter Jr. of the Nets led his team in the scoreboard with 23 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Phoenix Suns currently stand at sixth position in the Western Conference standingswhile the Brooklyn Nets are in 13th place in the Eastern Conference.
