Gui Santos signed a multi-year contract extension

SAN FRANCISCO – It was career year for Gui Santosand the The Golden State Warriors rewarded him as such.

Santos and the warriors agreed to contract extension the team announced Saturday morning — a three-year, $15 million deal with a player option for 2028-29, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoint. Santos was supposed to be a restricted free agent this summer, but the Warriors signed him to a win-win deal.

With injuries and absences plaguing Golden State this season, Santos has emerged as a key rotation in Steve Kerr’s system. A 2022 second-round draft pick out of Brazil, the third-string forward has worked his way up from the Warriors’ G-League affiliate in Santa Cruz to now being the guy Kerr and the Dubs trust to close with in tight games.

With Kerr cementing him as the starter about a month ago, Santos averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 28.8 minutes in 12 games.

In that stretch, Santos came up with two game-winning plays – a quick layup to take the lead against the Phoenix Suns and a chaotic layup in traffic at home against the Memphis Grizzlies.

“He took another step this year, Guy did,” Kerr told reporters after the win in Memphis earlier this week. “He was a very important role for us last year. Number one on the team in plus-minus and after the (Jimmy Butler) trade he really solidified that role. But now he’s become more on the ball as a creator (and) a guy who’s stepped up. The step-by-step you’ve seen has been incredible.

“He has the ability to play point guard when the other team is pressuring us. He’s a really versatile player and someone we really value.”

Santos’ journey to the NBA

For Santos, his journey to this point in his career has required patience. After the team’s practice Thursday afternoon, Santos reflected on what he had to do to become a guy capable of staying in the NBA.

“I think the key word for that is patience,” Santos he said.

“Patience, because when I came here, I was a point guard playing in Brazil. I played like a point guard, had the ball in my hand, and I spent a whole year in the G-League just learning how to fit into the system here, because my goal was always to play in the NBA, play for the Warriors. And I asked (Kerr), what is he, what are you supposed to do, I did it. like, you have to play hard on defense. You have to crash the boards all time, and you just have to find Steph.

It’s safe to say that Santos has done all of those things, which is why Kerr felt comfortable increasing his minutes this season after not seeing much action the previous two seasons.

But ultimately, what stands out about Santos is his relentless positivity and upbeat personality. You’ll rarely find Santos without a big smile on his face, whether he’s on the podium, in training or talking to his teammates. That’s why even now he’s grateful for the opportunity and support the Warriors gave him.

“The coaches here, the staff and the organization, they’re always nice to me,” Santos said. “They always help me with everything I need, and right now they give me the opportunity to show a little more because of everything that happened.
