Hawks GM explains his choice to part ways with Treo Young

A few days after departure from Trae Young pour Washington, Saleh ons he spoke to reporters for the first time about his most significant decision since then his appointment to office general manager of the Hawksin April.

An opportunity for Landry Fields’ successor to explain that he will not hesitate to be active in the market, if he believes in doing so Atlanta the best.

« If trades can be made, why wait? This is my philosophy » he reminds. « If we like something and it makes sense, we will do it. We just do what’s best for our organization. And, you know, I’m not one to wait for things like that. »

Sensible transfer for the Hawks

Da Onsi Saleh « they want the best “there is Trae Young« face of the franchise for a very long time », he also ensures that the Hawks come out of this transfer stronger, both financially and sportingly.

« We love this exchange and think what we’ve done is something that will really help us now and later » adds the manager, who could lose his All-Star leader without compensation in a few months. ” The players we’re bringing back are, I think, great recruits that make sense for us, allow us to get depth. I think you saw a little of that (against the Warriors). »

In exchange for Trae Young, CJ McCollum etc Corey Kispert therefore landed in Atlanta. If the latter is under a guaranteed contract until 2028, the former will still test the market this summer. A file that must therefore be managed intelligently.

« We’ll see how this plays out over the course of the season, but CJ is someone I think could fit in here long term. I’m really, really excited to have him on board, but I can’t really talk about contract extension talks or negotiations. » declares Onsi Saleh.

An injury rich in lessons

Onsi Saleh also does not hide the level of play shown by the Hawks in Tree Young’s absence speeded things up in his mind.

« We learned a lot about our team this season » he admits, compared to this period between November and December. « Looking at our group, the evolution of the guys on the field and the rejuvenation process we started… (…) It was the right decision for us. »

And then go into a little more detail: “ Jalen’s (Johnson) game has evolved so much that he does amazing things on the court. More importantly, I think he makes his teammates better. And that’s how we see things, as the group grows. It is the collective that has the advantage, not a single player. It’s Jalen, it’s Dyson (Daniels), it’s Onieka (Okongwu), it’s Zaccharie (Risacher), it’s Nickeil (Alexander-Walker)… We’ve got Nikhil and Jalen, who hit phenomenal milestones and, when Dyson has the ball in his hands, we jump forward. So again, it’s all about what we observe and how it fits into the whole group, not just one person. »
