Heat seduced by Jahmir Young’s mentality
Jahmir Young not the type to give up. Unmade in 2024. leading scorer The lefty was able to finish the season with a two-way contract with Chicago and even excelled in the Summer League by setting a summer record 40 points in Las Vegas, only to have it cut short in the process.
Miami gave him another chance by inviting him to their training camp via a “Figure 10” contract and they were confident in his performance. The result: He inherited the franchise’s last “two-way contract” in Florida, to the detriment of Precious Achiuva in particular which in turn was cut.
Terrible attacker
It was Friday night, after the final preseason game against Memphis, when he got the good news and had to hold back to control his overwhelming emotions.
“I was with my agent. We went to dinner and he told me the news. Obviously, I was very happy. I immediately called my mother. I’m just happy and grateful for this opportunity.”, he stated.
Miami revealed a valuable side to Jahmir Young, which clearly pleased Erik Spoelstra and his staff. Otherwise, the Heat coach knew his Jalen Brunson-like scoring abilities after his outstanding G-League finish (20 points on 39.7% 3-pointers, 4.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists average in 13 games!), which even allowed him to play the Bucks’ first six NBA games.
“His speed and liveliness with the ball in hand, his ability to penetrate the racket and hit threes are unique”Erik Spoelstra recalled. “He had a very good season last year. And then in practice, when we put him on the third team and practiced against him and kind of let him do his thing, he was hard to contain.”
Work hard not to regret anything
The experiences, sometimes painful, had the merit of strengthening him a little more, and the shortened adventure in Chicago especially hardened him before the rules of the “basketball business”.
“It’s a shame when you know how hard I’ve worked, especially with my performances. But you have to be ready for anything in this business because at the end of the day it’s a business. The organization will do what’s best for them and I’m focused on staying ready, keeping my head down and working.”added Jahmir Young. “It’s harder to stay (in the NBA) than to get there. So every day I’m 100% on my own and I’m here to help the team. Just to be in this franchise that really invests in its players, in player development, it’s amazing. It gives me life again. It just shows that I have to keep working.”
The Heat also cut Ethan Thompson, Daino Dainya and Bez Mbenga who were on “Show 10” and will be reassigned to the G-League. The Florida franchise has 14 guaranteed contracts and three two-way contracts with Myron Gardner, Vladislav Goldin and Jahmir Young.
