Houston is in talks to buy and relocate the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun

With Houston Rockets led by star Kevin Durant and looking to make an impact in the NBA this season, the franchise appears to be making moves off the basketball court as well, with this latest news affecting the WNBA as well. As rumors continue to surround the Rockets following this news, it appears the team’s ownership may be considering a new venture in the growing WNBA.

Well, it depends on what you mean by the new team, which Houston is on “essential conversations” with Connecticut Sun for a “potential purchase” that would involve moving, Alexa tells Philip.

“Breaking: Houston Rockets ownership in substantive talks with Connecticut Sun about potential purchase and relocation of WNBA franchise, sources and (Ramona Shelburne) tell me,” Philip wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Multiple reports from ESPN state that talks between the two sides have taken place “positive”, but it’s still not a done deal regarding the future of the Connecticut franchise.

“Discussions were described as ‘positive,’ and Rockets ownership has improved its offer to a number the Suns could find acceptable, a source close to the situation said,” Filippo and Shelburne wrote Friday. “The source said that while a formal offer was being discussed, the parties had not signed an exclusivity agreement and no decision had been made on the future of the franchise.”

Houston was a location mentioned by WNBA Commissioner Cathy Englebert, where she said the city and even the owner of the Rockets Tilman Fertitta are “next”. In the WNBA, there used to be a team called the Houston Comets, who actually won the league’s first four titles.

It remains to be seen what will happen to the Rockets and whether the WNBA team will be purchased.
