How Cooper Flag was warned about Victor Vembanyama

DALLAS— Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks will host Victor Vembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night to kick off the 2025-26 season. A battle of 1st spades will not attract as much attention as Flagg is getting ready to make his NBA debut. Meanwhile, Vembanyama are set to begin their third year in the league. Flagg he told reporters on Tuesday that he never saw Vembanyama in person, but watched the video and even got a message about the Spurs star.

“I mean, obviously I’ve seen the tape and whatnot. I’ve never seen him play in person, I’ve never seen him in person,” Flagg said of Vembanyama. “From what the guys have told me, he’s something you’ve never seen before. You can’t really understand it until you see it in person…Obviously, he’s an amazing player and I’m looking forward to getting that experience and being able to compete against him.”

Spurs-Mavericks will give fans the first Wembanjama-Flag clash

Vembanjama is an amazing player to say the least. His height (he’s listed at 7’4″) is a talking point, but Vembanjama has a versatile game. It’s rare to see a player over seven feet tall who can do the things the Spurs star is capable of on the floor. Whether it’s scoring, defending, passing, dribbling or something else, Vembanyama is truly “something you’ve never seen before”.

Flagg is up for the challenge. He won’t mostly defend Vembanyama, but Cooper could help with some double teams. In the end, Flagg and the Mavericks’ primary focus is on winning. The same can be said for Vembanyama and Spurs.

However, Flagg and Wembanjama have been two of the hottest players in the NBA since LeBron James in 2003. With both stars starting their careers and playing in Texas, Wednesday’s matchup will likely represent the first of many battles between the phenoms.
