How Cowboys Honored Marshawn Kneeland Before ‘MNF’

The Dallas Cowboys heavy hearts head to Monday Night Football fresh off a bye week. Tonight’s game (November 17) is the first game after the death of Marshawn Kneeland. The Cowboys defensive end died on Nov. 6, three days after scoring his first career touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals.

As the Cowboys head to face the Las Vegas Raiders at 8:15 PM ET, the community team released a short video honoring Kneeland. In the Cowboys’ locker room, Kneeland’s No. 94 jersey hangs in his vacated locker as a tribute to the late defensive end.

During his weekly press conference last week, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer was emotional while talking about Kneeland.

“It hurts,” Schottenheimer said.

“My heart is heavy,” Schottenheimer continued. “The heart of our team is heavy. We’re not moving on, but we’re moving forward.”

Schottenheimer then shared what the team’s next steps are and how they are leaning on each other during this difficult time.

“We’re not moving on, we’re moving forward, and we’re doing it together, and we’re doing it by locking arms and working and breathing and growing and processing together,” Schottenheimer said.

Kneeland died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a brief police chase.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also spoke after Kneeland’s death, he told Dallas-Fort Worth radio station 105.3 The Fan how much he “appreciated the national news, the national recognition for him.”

“He was very unique in his passion for the game. And of course the saddest thing for someone like me is the fact that he was only 24 years old. You think all the time that we’re going to miss him and the people around him are going to miss him, he’s just getting started,” Jones said.

The Cowboys will honor Kneeland throughout the season with a special sticker on their helmets throughout the season. It is unclear when the decals will be added to the helmets and what the design will look like as it has not yet been revealed.
