How Erik Spoelstra ‘inspired’ Miami in a big win against the Hornets
MIAMI – After The Miami Heat defeated the Charlotte Hornets in the first NBA Cup Friday night’s group stage game, 126-108, also marked an emotional night for the head coach Erik Spoelstra. The day before the victory over the Hornets, c The Heat coach returned home due to a devastating house fire after arriving on a late flight from Denver, Colorado, which led some to admire Spoelstra for overcoming such a difficult time.
The feeling in the locker room was mutual in their respect for Spoelstra when they showed up at the coach shortly after his house burned down, though thankfully no one was hurt. One player who spoke about Spoelstra was the star Jaime Jaquez Jr., who said that Spoelstra “inspirational” like “you’d never know something tragic had happened.”
“I just want to say how inspiring it was to see him here,” Jaquez said after posting 18 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and two blocks. “You would never know that something tragic happened today. He took it as a normal day. The first thing he said to us was, ‘We appreciate all the wishes.’ The most important thing is that, you know, his kids and his family were fine, and the fact that he came here with a smile on his face and excited to coach us like nothing happened.
“I mean, it just shows what kind of person he is,” Jacquez continued. “You know, the material things don’t really matter. The people you surround yourself with. And I mean, it was so, so inspiring to see him here, and we thank him for being a leader for us in this locker room. And you know, we really want to get that win for him.”

Although it hit Spoelstra after the game about his home run, he entered the game with “lots of positivity” as Norman Powell told ClutchPoints.
“I think about situations like that, I think it’s really bad, but it’s out of your control, you know,” Powell said after scoring 25 points. “And I think he’s a guy that really focuses on the mental side of things, that he’s closed-minded, that he focuses on what you can control, that he’s in the present moment. So when I saw him before warmups and stuff in the gym … He was laughing and said the Spoelstras are very resilient. I told him I know. He’s a guy that’s been through adversity, he said he can control everything. replace the most important thing is the family good.

Other players like Pele Larsson would mention how the team wanted to win the game for Spoelstra, and even Andrew Wiggins echoed the same sentiments and labeled it as it was “special game” for him to be the coach and for the team to win. Either way, it will be a quick turnaround as the Heat play the second game of a back-to-back Saturday night against the Portland Trail Blazers.
