How Tyler Hero ‘helped’ Jaime Yakuza Jr. to return

MIAMI – Like The Miami Heat are leading a new style of attackby focusing more on a free-flowing system and picking up the pace, many players benefited, and no one doubtless Jaime Jaquez Jr., in the midst of his third NBA season. Doc Jaquez was a huge boost for the Heat so far this season, he has been coached from the sidelines by one player who helped in his development, u Tyler Herro.

Miami’s star guard is currently missing time due to ankle surgery, and a return to the set has yet to be revealed, but that hasn’t stopped Hero from motivating his team on the sidelines. There was a notable interaction with Herr and Jaquez in Friday’s win over the Charlotte Hornets, with the latter pointing out how the star coached him about drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line.

So far this season, Jaquez’ activity in the charity tournament has increased as he has attempted about two free throws per game in his first two years, while approaching four in each contest in the current campaign. It helps that Jaquez went more downhill in the quick offense, relying on basket attacks, but Hero’s advice was “extremely useful.”

“He’s been a big help, he’s really good at drawing fouls that way,” Jaquez said last Friday. “So any advice I can get from him, I always take, and he’s always in my ear, telling me before the game, he asked me, ‘How many times do we have to get to the line, just knowing, playing downhill. And that’s how shooters score to that foul line.’

With Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s stats are up this season for the Heatwith the system playing to his strengths and running him downhill, it seems natural that this will lead to more chances at the free throw line. Hero also saw an increase in efficiency and free throw attempts in his All-Star season, while Spoelstra talks about the difference between the two players, he likes when players can “gain different little insights.”

“I mean, they’re totally different style offensive players, but, yeah, I like when guys talk to each other and try to get different little insights,” Spoelstra told ClutchPoints before Monday’s game against Cleveland. “You know, Jaime’s three yards and a cloud of dust away, you know, to get to the free throw line. Tyler’s developing different ways to draw fouls. But I like the variety and that they’re different. Yeah, that’s been a good thing. But I also really like the way Jaime rebounds the basketball. We’ve got to check that box to do a better job.”

Jacquez impressed in his first season, after being selected 18th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, earning him a first-team NBA All-Rookie selection. However, he would regress in his sophomore season and even admitted in the offseason that he was trying too hard to be a knockdown three-point shooter instead of using his physicality.

Through 10 games, Jaquez is averaging 17.1 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game, showing the improved playmaker he has been this season. With the Heat entering Monday’s contest against the Cavs with a 6-4 record, the two teams face off once again on Wednesday night before Miami travels on the road to play the New York Knicks on Sunday.
