“I can’t wait to see how we attack next season”
If Alec Sarr wasn’t walking the floor of the Intuit Dome this Friday during Rising Stars, within Wizards was still present in the corridors of the Clippers room in the morning to answer the French and international media that arrived in Los Angeles for the weekend.
Being in LA allows the pivot to project into the future. Either individually, with the goal of becoming an All-Star. But also collectively with the arrival of Treo Young and Anthony Davis in Washington.
Alex, despite your retirement, how does it feel to be here and take part in a big NBA party?
That makes me happy. Obviously, very disappointed that I couldn’t play. It’s a game that makes you happy, where everyone wants to have fun, and it rewards the work you’ve done. But I think there will be others coming in the future, it’s happening. I’m lucky to have three teammates that I can encourage. I can’t wait to see the matches tonight.
Is participating in Sunday’s match one of your goals for the coming seasons?
Of course, that’s the goal. That was even the goal for this year. Being around motivates you to see the guys who are going to play on Sunday. It motivates you to work, to do what it takes to win the title of All Star.
Think you’re close?
Yes. I think I still have work to do, of course, but I’m not too far off.
You’ve recovered Treo Young and Anthony Davis, how do you approach this new phase for the Wizards?
that’s great. We have more and more young people starting to establish themselves and we are adding two very important pieces, two great players. I can’t wait to start working with them this summer and see where they take us next season.
In France, we were perhaps a bit concerned when we saw Anthony Davies arriving in your place… Are there any concerns about your role?
No, not at all. It’s more interesting to me. I can learn a lot from him. He has been very effective throughout his career and continues to be a very effective player. I can learn a lot from him, especially defensively. I think we have the qualities to play well together.
What were your first interactions with Treo Young and Anthony Davis?
Trae Young arrived almost two weeks ago, I would say. Just seeing him, he’s there, giving advice during games. He sees the game differently. So it is always good to be able to communicate with him and understand how he will be able to help us when he is available. And Anthony Davis, we haven’t had a chance to see him yet.
This season we feel more comfortable in your team. Is this a logical progression or was there some work after your return from the French team?
Yes definitely. I could already study from the first year. See what would work for me, what I could improve. Really, I’m just working on my weak points. And then knowing how I want to play, how I can be effective for my game, but also for the team’s game.
Having a leader like Trae Young, one of the best pick & roll players, what can that do for you in your quest to become an All Star?
A lot. As everyone knows, he is very strong in the pick-and-roll. Very strong overall, just to see the game. So it will attract the defense a lot. Whether it’s me or my teammates, I think it will make things easier for us in attack.
You’ll go from a team stuck at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings to a playoff contender next season. Does it require an evolution of your mentality and that of the other young players in the team?
I don’t think the mentality itself really changes. When we are on the field, we try to improve as much as possible. We try to do our best. It will be the same next season. Afterwards, it motivates you, makes you want to play even harder. And then I can’t wait to see the reaction of the fans. I want to see how we attack next season. I’m really looking forward to it.
