Improving communication in Portland
While Cade Cunningham is pleased to see the Pistons are capable to better negotiate the end of the meetingto make fewer mistakes in “money time” or to manage to overcome them, which was not the case in recent years, Blazers they still seem stuck in this area.
Tiago Splitter’s players struggle, manage to shake certain teams and even give themselves a chance to win. But all too often they end up broken. How can we explain this fragility at crucial moments?
“One of the important things for us is that we can talk to each other on the court. Sometimes it’s very quiet on the court”, notes Toumani Camara. “We need to talk”insists the Portland coach. “And these small adjustments on the floor have to be made by the players. I can’t dictate everything from the bench, I’m too far away. They have to communicate. We have to talk more. These discussions during matches are important.”
Liberos who are too introverted?
This lack of words between players can be partly explained by the absence of leaders like Damian Lillard – even if it works in the shadows – and Jrue Holiday, but also Robert Williams III and Mathis Tiboul, all injured. With these strong defenders on the court, the Blazers will gain in intensity and communication, that’s for sure.
However, Tumani Kamara offers another explanation.
“We have a lot of introverted, very intelligent players. We have to make ourselves talk a little more. I’m not saying we don’t talk at all on the pitch, but we can clearly improve in this area. That’s something that can make us take a step forward.”analyzes the Belgian, aware that he has to open his mouth more. “I try to be one of the people who talk the most, whether it’s on the bench, during timeouts or in meetings. On defense, I try to communicate what I’m doing, what I’m seeing.”
Defensively, however, the interior, positioned as the defensive libero, must lead his teammates, and is therefore mostly on Donovan Clingan etc Yang Hansen to advance on the field.
