Insider sets the record straight on Domantas Sabonis, Warriors trade theory

The The Golden State Warriors won to a lukewarm start to the 2025-26 season, currently at 10-9. That being the case, many fans have offered up potential trade ideas to help Golden State squeeze out whatever is left Stephen Curry’s Twilight Yearswith one popular name popping up is the Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis.

Recently, NBA insider Jake Fisher came to Marc Stein’s Substack break down why this might not be such a realistic idea.

“In fact, I don’t think the Warriors will consider any Sabonis sweepstakes. . . . Pursuing Sabonis and his $42.3 million salary would obviously force Golden State to give up more than (Jonathan) Cumminga, which begs the natural question: How many valuable pieces of their roster would the Warriors really be willing to play center or point guard?” Fisher wondered.

Fisher noted that “newly acquired Al Horford hasn’t delivered anything close to what (the Warriors) were hoping for as a free agent signing, but I don’t think the situation is dire enough for Golden State to tear up their roster and add Sabonis.”

Indeed, Horford has had a poor start to his tenure in the Bay Area, but it’s worth wondering how much Sabonis would alleviate the Warriors’ real problems, which seem to include rim protection and floor spacing, as Fisher pointed out.

There’s also potential residual bad blood between Sabonis and Draymond Green left over from their 2023 playoff clash between the Warriors and Sacramento Kings, and it would certainly be interesting to see how the two get along as teammates.

Either way, the Warriors will move forward with the roster they have now assembled on Wednesday night when they host the Houston Rockets at 10:00 PM ET.
