Is Cooper Flagg coming back against the Magic? The latest Mavericks injury update suggests that could happen

After Dallas Mavericks freshman Cooper Flagg missed Tuesday’s 117-90 loss for the Charlotte Hornets, received an encouraging injury report ahead of Wednesday’s matchup against Orlando Magic. Flagg has missed the last eight games with a foot injury, but his status with the Mavericks has been upgraded to questionable injury report.

Flagg, who has not played since the Mavericks’ 120-111 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Feb. 20, could return for Thursday’s game against the Magic. The Rookie of the Year candidate averaged 20.4 points on 48.2% shooting, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game this season.

Former NBA guard Jeff Teague addressed Mavericks prospect Cooper Flagg for Rookie of the Year unlike Hornets rookie Kon Knuepel. The two Dukes are the leading contenders for the award, and the race is close, with Knuepel leading slightly as the favorite to win the award.

Flagg, who led the race all season, was passed over by Knuepel because of Cooper’s injury and the Hornets’ five-game winning streak, as Teague noted in his choice for Rookie of the Year, according to the Club 520 podcast.

“If he (Knuppel) isn’t Rookie of the Year, he’s robbed. They (are) actually winning games, he (is) averaging 20 points.”

In his first season alone, Flagg has averaged 20+ points, while the Hornets’ Knuepel is averaging 19.2 points on 48.8% shooting and his 43.5% 3-point clip leads the NBA, along with his 212 3-pointers. The Hornets improved to 31-31, the ninth-best record in the Eastern Conference standings.

Flagg and the Mavericks, who have lost eight of their last 10 games, have the fourth-worst record (21-40) in the Western Conference.
