Is Ja Morant a Jimmy Butler trade option?

As the NBA trade deadline approaches on Feb. 5, speculation has intensified over whether he will The Golden State Warriors could be in for a big roster shakeup following Jimmy Butler III’s season-ending injury. One name that has come up in league talk is I Morantbut a recent report has put that idea to rest.

In his latest trade deadline update, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel addressed whether Morant could realistically emerge as a target for Golden State after Butler’s injury and the ongoing questions surrounding it Jonathan Cumminga‘s rolls.

“Some have also speculated that the Warriors could enter the mix for Ja after Butler’s injury and given Cummings’ drama with the organization,” Siegel reported. “But team sources told ClutchPoints directly that it’s not even being discussed.”

The clarification comes in the middle of a tussle where Morant’s name continued to appear in trade rumorsdespite the player’s repeated indications that he intends to stay with Memphis Grizzlies. After Memphis’ recent win over the Orlando Magic in London, Morant emphasized his loyalty to the franchise, noting that his commitment should be obvious.

Morant’s actions reinforced that message. The 26-year-old security guard has a Grizzly logo tattoo on back and has consistently presented Memphis as the place where he wants to build his career. Still, the Grizzlies’ uneven season has fueled outside speculation, especially as teams around the league evaluate potential deadline upgrades.

On the court, Morant is in his seventh NBA season and is averaging 19.5 points, 8.1 assists, 3.3 rebounds and one steal per game in 20 appearances. His efficiency dipped, as he shot 41 percent from the field and a career-low 23.5 percent from three-point range, though he made a career-high 89.7 percent of his free throws. He’s logging 28.5 minutes per contest as Memphis continues to look for consistency.

Morant’s contract also complicates any hypothetical trade discussions. He is in the third year of a five-year, $197.2 million contract, and earned $39.4 million this season. The deal runs through the 2027–28 season, making it a long-term financial commitment for any acquiring team.

Memphis currently sits in 11th place in the Western Conference at 18–24 after losing to the Atlanta Hawks 124–122 on Wednesday night. The Grizzlies will look to bounce back on Friday when they host the New Orleans Pelicans.

Golden State, meanwhile, is dealing with its own challenges. The Warriors are 25–20 and eighth in the West after losing to the Toronto Raptors 145–127 on Tuesday. Butler’s injury has increased the urgency to evaluate roster options, but Siegel’s report suggests Morant is not part of those internal discussions.

For now, the Warriors will focus on stabilizing their rotation as they open a four-game road trip against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night. While Morant’s name may continue to float around, league sources indicate a Warriors-Grizzlies blockbuster involving the Memphis star is off the table as the deadline nears.
