Ja Morant, luxury assistant coach in Memphis
It is not a complete exaggeration to say that this season, I Morant there is more talk outside the field than on it. We’re obviously referring to his comments on Tuomas Iisal’s system of play, which led to a one-match suspension, or even his beef with Klay Thompson. Because he played only 12 matches and was in the infirmary for two weeks due to a lower leg injury.
So much so that we can wonder what the former All-Star has brought to the Grizzlies since the start of the season, between injuries, controversies and clumsiness, and even more now that he is stuck on the bench… The answer is found by his coach and teammates.
“He is a great asset for us”, assure Tuomas Iisalo. “During matches he asks me questions and gives advice to the guys. In general, he communicates well. His leadership is good.”
“He is currently a coach”pursuit Jaren Jackson Jr. “He trains, as well as with his youth national team in Memphis. He does his thing. He knows basketball, he is a playmaker, so he reads the game very well. And he says what he sees, he explains certain things to us.”
In the seven matches in which he was absent, and with a schedule that is neither easy nor difficult, Ja Morant saw five victories of his teammates, including three in a row. Grizzlies therefore do not suffer without their leader.
“His support is positive”continues Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. “He supports the team, he helps the youngsters, especially the playmakers, talking to everyone, saying what he sees from the bench. It is useful for us that he is there, to be a leader, a player who speaks. He is very good at that.”
