Jalen Green’s season debut sparks a cultural shift in Phoenix
PHOENIX — Jalen Green‘s debut for Phoenix Suns seems to be worth the wait for the team and fan base. Weeks earlier, it wasn’t like that.
When the team embarked on a preseason trip to China, Green suffered a hamstring injury that would keep him out until the season opener.
Even when the 10-day evaluation period came, he was not cleared. However, head coach Jordan Ott said it will be a “day-to-day” thing. But that phrase turned into a thing week after week.
The constant waiting and watching his teammates compete every day drove him crazy. However, there was light at the end of the tunnel.
During the team’s scrimmage on Thursday, the guard was spotted shooting onto the field after the media was available. Fast forward seven hours to the game, Ott announced he would play.
Despite the minutes restriction, Green made the most of it. He had 29 points, three rebounds and three assists while shooting 6-for-13 from deep in 23 minutes of action.
Playing in front of a home crowd seemed long overdue, but Green did grateful for the opportunity to dress up.
“It’s frustrating … but that’s part of the mental game right there, just locking in with my coaches,” Green said after Thursday’s game, citing a period of recovery from a right hamstring strain.
“Big credit to the training staff. They kept me going. It was a tricky situation so we stuck with it and got the days going.”
Jaylen Green wowed many in his Suns debut

Before Green’s season debut, he caught flak for being an ineffective, bulky shooter who was a freak athlete. Granted, a single-game sample size isn’t a sufficient means of justification, but it’s safe to say he put in the work.
The former G-League Ignite guard has already cemented his name in the franchise record book in just one game. Green became the first Suns player to make six 3-pointers in his first game with the franchise.
Many of his 3-pointers were contested shots, not just the catch-and-shoot opportunities his teammates had. They were off the dribble, off the catch, and he consistently showed the ability to make a move off that catch. The shooting took many by surprise, and the degree of difficulty was impressive.
Immediately after that sixth point, Green walked toward the Phoenix crowd and became excited, which spread to his teammates. That enthusiasm and passion was something the Suns lacked last season.
As soon as he made that 3, the game was basically sealed. For Otto, moments like Green’s celebration of the audience can get lost in translation, but he knows their size.
I asked Jordan Ott about this particular game and how Jalen Green’s energy spilled over to the rest of the team.
“At times we can be too technical or too analytical or too data-driven – where the spirit of the environment and the joy of basketball often gets left behind.”

“At times we can get too technical or too analytical or too data-driven where the spirit of the environment and the joy of basketball is often left behind,” Ott said after the game.
“You can feel it. You can feel the energy of the building you’re in, whether you’re on the road or at home. But when you have a united group and they’re rooting for each other, it plays like that stick.”
Jalen Green’s play completely unlocks the Suns’ identity
Obviously, one player usually can’t make all the difference. But don’t tell Green that. He made that difference when he was with the Houston Rockets — helping them to the No. 2 seed last season.
That Rockets team was, and still is, relatively young. Despite the new scenery change, almost the same situation applies. This is the second.
Green is also someone Devin Booker has never played with before. He’s played with guys who can create their own shot, but nobody like the 23-year-old.
He is as explosive an athlete as there is in the NBA right now. His ability to go downhill is something the league is adjusting to. The highlight reels don’t tell the whole story.
For example, for his first points in a Suns uniform, he made an acrobatic up-and-down layup. That was just a microcosm of his game.
All questions about Green agrees with Booker maybe completely gone. 29 points in 23 minutes is certainly impressive, and something Suns fans haven’t seen in a long time.
This could be just a glimpse of how Phoenix’s new backcourt duo can reactivate the Valley of the Sun.
