Jalen Hurts refuses to blame Kevin Patul for offensive struggles

The Philadelphia Eagles‘ quest for a repeat Super Bowl title ended with a broken heart on Sundaylike San Francisco 49ers left Lincoln Financial Field with a 23-19 victory in the Wild Card round.

The loss immediately fired up offensive coordinator Kevin Patul. The Eagles’ offense looked disjointed for much of the night, as they failed to capitalize on two key interceptions by rookie Quinyon Mitchell. Despite the hype surrounding play-calling, the quarterback Jalen Hurts refused to point the finger at his coordinator during his postgame availability.

“I think I’m always growing, always taking my experiences and learning from everything we go through,” Hurts said when asked about Patul. “I think it’s hard to single out one person, especially at a time like this. We all have to improve, and that’s how I look at it.”

While Hurts is taking the high road, the numbers paint a bleak picture of the offensive output. Hurts finished with just 168 passing yards and one touchdown, struggling to push the ball downfield against the 49ers’ secondary. The connection with star receiver AJ Brown was virtually non-existent; Brown finished with a quiet 3 for 25 yards and was seen in a heated exchange with head coach Nick Sirianni on the sideline.

The offense was delayed several times in the second half. After taking a 13-10 lead into the locker room, Philadelphia managed a modest 36 yards in the third quarter. When they needed an effort to save their season, the unit fumbled, ending with Hurts throwing an incomplete on a desperate 4th-and-11 with 43 seconds left.

Patullo, who was promoted to offensive coordinator after winning the Super Bowl last season, will likely face intense scrutiny in the coming days. But for now, his quarterback is keeping the blame in the locker room.
