James Dolan reveals the ‘collaborative’ reason behind Tom Thibodeau’s firing
James Dolan explained the reasons for New York The Knicks are moving on with Tom Thibodeau despite their run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2025.
Thibodeau played a big role in helping the Knicks return to playoff relevance in the 2020s. He bought the franchise to four postseason appearances, including their best streak since 2000 when they reached the Eastern Conference Finals.
However, Dolan and the front office saw that it was best to move on from Thibodeau after six seasons. Franchise owner reflected on the decision during his interview on VFAN, according to reporter Chris Pursiainen.
“I’m not saying you can’t win a title with Tom Thibodeau…if you want to build a long-term, competitive team, you need someone who is much more of a contributor than Tom. Tom was still a great coach, he should coach again in the NBA. If I had a franchise that was just starting, Dolan would say he would be a gold mine..”
“We’ve talked to Tom all the time. Look, I don’t want to get too into that — the interaction. All last year when we talked to Tom … he’d probably tell you he’s stubborn. But he’d also tell you he’s right.”
What’s next for James Dolan, Knicks

It’s clear that James Dolan and the Knicks front office want a championship in the near future. While they appreciate Tom Thibodeau for everything he’s done to help turn the franchise back into a serious playoff contender, they realized that walking away from him would pave the way for them to take the next step toward that.
New York is off to a successful start in its first year with Mike Brown as head coach. They stand out as one of the best teams in the league, showcasing talent on both sides of the ball with Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges among others.
New York has a 23-13 record on the season, holding third place in the Eastern Conference standings. They are two games ahead of the Toronto Raptors and 2.5 games ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers, while trailing the Boston Celtics by 0.5 games and the Detroit Pistons by four games.
Riding a four-game losing streak, the Knicks will look to get back into the win column in their next game. They will be at home when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on January 7th at 7:30pm ET.
