Jarrett Allen has a broken finger, but there’s a catch

Although they are expected to bring back Darius Garland in the near futurethe Cleveland Cavaliers they just can’t avoid the early season injury bug. The team made the announcement Thursday night Jarrett Allen sustained a fracture of the distal phalanx without displacement.
Allen’s left ring finger injury happened on Wednesday, the same day the Boston Celtics took home the wine and gold. This was confirmed by an examination and subsequent X-rays performed by the franchise’s medical team at the Cleveland Clinic for Sports Medicine.
According to the organization’s press release, Allen will undergo treatment and evaluation before his playing status is determined for Friday night’s game against the Toronto Raptors. He will be listed as suspicious.
This is just the latest addition to the list of injury woes to kick off the wine and gold campaign. Already without Garland and Max Struss, the Cavs were without De’Andre Hunter for the first two games due to a knee-to-knee collision in the preseason finale.
When Hunter returned, apparently Cleveland lost Sam Merrill in the blink of an eyeas he and Evan Mobley ran into each other. He left Monday’s game with a right hip contusion, although Kenny Atkinson called it a hip pointer.
Add all that up and every day the rotation players will have to play catch up with the rest of the team. At the very least, Allen’s partially broken finger likely won’t affect his game; yet how effective will the Cavs’ second leading rebounder and screen setter be when something like that bothers him?
While this will put Evan Mobley on the boards more, everyone on the team will have to crash harder and fight for possession. That was the case even before the Allen news broke.
Hopefully it won’t take long for Allen’s finger to heal and he can return to his usual self in the paint and on the block. Until that point, however, it will take more heart and focus from the rest of Cleveland’s roster.
