Jason Kidd gets brutally honest about Anthony Davis’ fitness

The The Dallas Mavericks are off to an 0-2 start until the 2025-26 NBA season, and the talk in the NBA world has focused on that Anthony Davis and its conditioning. Davis underwent eye surgery in the offseason, forcing him to wear goggles for the rest of his career. As the regular season has begun, Davis may not be in the shape the Mavericks need him to be.
Before Sunday’s Mavericks game against the Toronto Raptors, the head coach Jason Kidd talked about Anthony Davis’ conditioning and what it will take to get him in type form the team needs him to be in, according to Ron Harrod Jr. from DLLS Mavs.
“Again, he’s been out with surgery, so I think playing 36 minutes last night will help him with that conditioning,” Jason Kidd said. “Playing PJ (Washington) 39 minutes is not something we want to do. So a lot of those guys … were probably tired and made some mental mistakes, but I’d rather it happen now than later. I think AD is going in the right direction to be in the shape we need.”
If Davis isn’t quite there in terms of his fitness to start the season, then it has to be the impressive production he’s still able to give the Mavericks.
In the Mavericks’ first two games of the season, Davis is averaging 24.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks in just 35 minutes of action. What is notable though is Davis’ shooting efficiency. He is shooting just 39 percent from the field and 25 percent from the three-point line, well below his career averages.
Davis was initially acquired by the Mavericks in a shocking trade which includes Luka Doncic from last season. Davis was the centerpiece of the deal for Dallas as they cited a focus on defense as a reason for the trade. He appeared in a total of nine games for the Mavericks last season as the team bounced back from a poor regular season to win a spot game.
