Jason Kidd, Mark Cuban’s Roles in GM Firing
The Dallas Mavericks‘ Turmoil in the front office reached a boiling point when the organization fired the general manager Nico Harrisonthus ending a chaotic tenure defined by the controversial trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers and shattered the franchise. But the move did not come without the pressure of familiar voices within the organization.
According to multiple reports, the minority owner Mark Cuban and head coach Jason Kidd played a key role in convincing team governor Patrick Dumont that Harrison lost control of the Mavericks. Cuban, who still owns about a quarter of the team, became increasingly frustrated after being cut out of basketball operations when he sold his majority stake to the Dumont and Adelson families in late 2023. ESPN reported that Cuban lobbied for Dumont for months to change management, claiming that Harrison’s decisions, primarily the Doncic deal, set the franchise back years.
Kidd also reportedly clashed with Harrison over the direction of the list. The two disagreed about the player rotation at the beginning of this season. Ultimately, Kidd’s choice to rely on untested guards underscored the divide. Kidd’s role only increased last summer when Dallas extended his contract after both the Knicks and Lakers showed interest in signing him. That extension gave the coach more certainty than anyone in the front office. This ultimately provided him with influence in any organizational search.
Who will lead the Mavericks after Nick Harrison leaves?

For now, assistant general managers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi will handle day-to-day operations. However, Cuban has already asked former Utah Jazz CEO Dennis Lindsey, now with the Detroit Pistons, to take over. Dumont has yet to commit. However, his recent meetings with Cuban suggest the longtime owner’s voice is being heard again in Dallas.
Harrison’s firing marks an attempt to reset a franchise that has slumped to a 3-8 start amid injuries to Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. Kidd stays firmly in place. But Cuban’s increased involvement could once again reshape the Mavericks. After years of internal division, Dallas faces a defining moment as it searches for unity and a way forward.
