Jason Kidd praises Nick Harrison before the season opener

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks will play the San Antonio Spurs in the season opener Wednesday night at the American Airlines Center. Until enough attention is on Cooper Flagg’s NBA debutDallas’ depth cannot be overlooked. Before the game, the head coach of the Mavs Jason Kidd said depth will be key this season and gave the general manager Nico Harrison kudos for creating such a deep list.

“That (depth) is great to have. I think Niko has done an amazing job putting together this roster,” Kidd he told reporters. “We believe we can compete at a high level, but without our health, even with the injury, we still believe we can compete at a high level because of that depth. And we’ll be able to show that tonight.”

Kidd said the Mavericks will start their big lineup tonight — expected to include Cooper Flagg, Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, Anthony Davis and Derek Lively II. That means players like D’Angelo Russell, Max Christie and Naji Marshall will come off the bench. In addition, Daniel Gafford — who is currently injured — will offer even more depth when he returns.

Harrison received backlash from fans after he traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last year. Although the deal wasn’t popular, Harrison built a roster that has serious potential. Of course, Kyrie Irving will only help when he returns later in the season (Irving is currently recovering from ACL surgery).

Jason Kidd will look to lead the Mavericks to a season-opening victory over the Spurs on Wednesday night.
