Jason Kidd teases Kyrie Irving return from injury in 2025
The Dallas Mavericks have had a rough start to the 2025 NBA season, currently 2-4 after a recent loss to the Detroit Pistons. Rookie Cooper Flagg has been up and down so far in the very early part of his career, and even recently lost Anthony Davis to injury.
Joining Davis on the sidelines is a star point guard Kyrie Irvingwho tore his ACL near the end of last season and is expected to rejoin the lineup at some point this year.
Most recently, he is the head coach of the Mavericks Jason Kidd hinted that Irving’s return could be coming sooner than some expect.
“We can’t wait to get Kai back at some point,” Kidd said recently, per The Athletic’s Christian Clark . “I hope it’s the 25th year, not the 26th. But we’ll see what happens.”
Irving was tasked with doing a tremendous amount of heavy lifting for the Mavericks last year after the disastrous Luka Doncic trade, and Davis went down with an injury shortly thereafter. Some blamed the increased workload for the injury he eventually suffered, effectively ending any chance the Mavericks had to compete last year.
Strange times for the Mavericks

Meanwhile, all eyes were on Cooper Flagg to start this season. The number one pick had some expected growing pains, but he also put up some big stat lines and made some stellar plays early in his NBA tenure.
If Irving is indeed able to return to the lineup in the next two months and Davis returns soon, it’s not out of the question that the Mavericks could make some noise in the West. However, there are real concerns about Dallas’ depth at this point, especially with Klay Thompson suffering through a terrible start to his age-35 season.
Either way, the Mavericks will next take the floor on Monday night against the Houston Rockets. That game will begin at 8:00 PM ET.
