Jaylen Brown cites player ‘integrity issues’ amid gambling probe
Boston Celtics star Jailen Brown loudly concerns about the impact of legalized sports betting on NBA players, citing “integrity issues” as a growing concern amid ongoing gambling investigations involving league personnel.
Speaking to SNI Knicks ahead of Boston’s game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, Brown addressed the challenges players face in a gambling-influenced environment that he believes was introduced without adequate consideration for athletes.
“That whole world was introduced a few years ago and I don’t think they took into account the players – especially with the energy, the gambling behavior and how that directly correlates with the players,” Brown said.
“We don’t benefit from any of the profits, but we have to deal with a lot of additional negativity and scrutiny behind all the gambling stuff. On top of that, it creates more integrity issues.”
The Celtics, who opened their 2025–26 campaign with a 117–116 loss to the Philadelphia 76erslooks like he’ll be back on friday night. Brown led the team in the season opener, scoring 25 points on 9-for-18 shooting while adding six rebounds and four assists in 36 minutes.

Brown’s remarks come at a time when The NBA has been dealing with numerous gambling controversies. Several figures – incl Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami guard Terry Rozier — have been arrested in recent days in connection with federal investigations into illegal betting activities. The league is also still managing the fallout from a lifetime ban on Toronto Raptors forward Jontey Porter earlier this year that stemmed from questionable betting patterns involving player performance.
Jaylen Brown talks gambling scandal puts NBA under pressure

While Brown did not mention any specific individuals or cases, his comments reflect a growing unease among active players about how gambling has changed the league’s culture. The NBA’s partnerships with sportsbooks and betting platforms have grown dramatically in recent seasons, integrating betting data into broadcasts and pregame coverage. Brown acknowledged the complexity of the situation and emphasized the need for broader discussions.
“I’m not sure what the answer is, but it’s definitely something people need to spend more time talking about,” he said.
The NBA and NBPA have yet to issue official joint statements following the recent arrests, but individual players and coaches around the league have begun to speak publicly about the effects of the widespread approach to betting on players’ mental health, performance control and the integrity of the entire league.
As for Friday’s game, the Celtics (0–1) will face a Knicks (1–0) team that opened its season with a road win earlier this week. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM ET and will air exclusively on Prime Video.
Brown’s stance adds to the broader conversation about how professional leagues and their players must manage the balance between gambling revenue and maintaining confidence in the integrity of the sport. With investigations still active and league politics under increasing scrutiny, the issue remains one of the most pressing facing the NBA in the 2025-26 season.
