Jaylen Brown shares his honest thoughts on Isaiah Stewart after a heated encounter

BOSTON — It’s not the eighties anymore, it is Detroit Pistons still hugging theirs Nicknamed “Bad Boys”.. however, Boston Celtics star Jailen Brown refused to utter that infamous nickname after the Green Team fell 112-105 to the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons on Monday night.

Instead, he used much more polite language when he spoke his third-quarter altercation with Pistons big man Isaiah Stewart it resulted in two techniques and much bickering.

“We were just having fun,” Brown said disingenuously. “I think Stewart is a nice guy.

That “nice guy” has a history with Brown.

The The Celtics star taunted Stewart last season after dunking him and was later fined $25,000.

He may have wanted to avoid a similar punishment when asked about his acrimonious encounter with Stewart on Monday. Or, Brown didn’t want to give the physical, dubbed “Beef Stew,” the satisfaction of knowing he’d gotten under his skin.

“You see in the league right now, there’s a lot of fake tough guys who act like they want to do something, but they really don’t,” Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff said before the game. “Our guys are honest. They don’t — well, sometimes they start to f*ck up, but they don’t quit when it gets going, and that’s the heart of our team.”

Boston wasn’t giving up either, as multiple Celtics tried to approach the Pistons’ bench after Stewart tangled with Brown.

Detroit tried to use its physicality to take Brown out of the game, but the four-time All-Star still finished with 34 points on 52% shooting from the field.

“I’m all for it,” Brown said when asked about the Pistons’ roughing it.

Stewart also shined with seven points, five offensive rebounds (just two shy of Boston’s total) and one block in 22 minutes off the bench. Stewart helped the Pistons outscore the C’s 47-14 on the bench and 16-8 on second-chance points.

Losing this margin hurt Boston, but they came close to winning despite various setbacks.

With 1:32 left in the fourth quarter, Celtics guard Derrick White cut the Pistons’ lead to just three points with a pull-up 3-pointer. however, Pistons star Cade Cunningham immediately responded with a hard turnover through White to put the contest out of reach again.

Despite the loss, the Celtics were adamant that they handled the tough matchup well and were not intimidated by the power of the Pistons.

“I thought we answered the call,” Celtics head coach Joe Mazzula said. “I think they’re one of the bigger, more physical teams in the league. … I liked our mental toughness. I liked our physical toughness the whole game.”

The C’s are now 1-2 against the Pistons this season and 7-3 in their last 10 games. And while the 15-11 Celtics have exceeded expectations so far this offseason, Brown still thinks he can do more to further elevate his team.

“I have to do better going forward,” he admitted. “Definitely a game that got away from us, that got away from me. So we’ll watch film and be ready for the next one.”

Next up are the 14-12 Miami Heat, who have also had plenty of tough games with the Celtics in recent years. Brown and company will try to answer the call again as they work better to bounce back from two games.
