Jaylen Brown Sounds Off All-Star ‘PR Contest’

The The Boston Celtics were one of the surprising stories of the NBA so far this season, currently at 19-12 despite a recent road loss to the Portland Trail Blazers to open their West Coast trip. Jaylen Brown played borderline MVP-level so far this season, putting up fantastic stat lines every night to help the Celtics stay atop the Eastern Conference standings despite playing without Jayson Tatum.

On Monday afternoon, the first batch of NBA All-Star fan votes were announced, and many were surprised to see that Brown received only the sixth-most votes in the East. After this, former NBA player Michael Redd took to X, formerly Twitter, calling the voting process a “popularity contest.”

“These votes are based on name recognition, which comes from past performances, social media presence and off-field narrative. Not necessarily who is currently having the best season,” Red wrote.

Brown then agreed with that sentiment in the quote tweet.

“I agree with the PR contest,” Brown wrote.

It should come as no surprise that fan voting is something of a popularity contest, but luckily for Brown, it’s not the only medium through which a player can be named an All-Star, and he’s almost guaranteed to be on the Eastern Conference roster when it’s officially announced.

Many were skeptical that the Browns would be able to hold down the fort without Tatum this year, and with Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis being traded during the offseason. However, Brown has been able to silence his doubters with efficient scoring, improved playmaking and a continuation of the Celtics’ solid defense so far this season.

The Celtics will next take the floor on Tuesday night on the road against the Utah Jazz, looking to avenge a loss at home earlier in the season.
