Jayson Tatum is pouring cold water on his imminent return from injury

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum took a big step in his potential comeback from injury as he trained with the team’s G League affiliateMaine Celtics this week. While practicing with G League teams, some players, Tatum, are often signaled waiting to return to the field was non-binding when asked about what his practice showed, according to Noah Dalzell of the Celtics Blog.

“It doesn’t mean I’m coming back or not,” Tatum said after speaking to the media for the first time this season.

Jayson Tatum has been ruled out after suffering an Achilles injury last season during the Celtics’ Eastern Conference semifinal series against the New York Knicks. While speculating about a potential return after training video that made the rounds last month, as well as his recent G League workout, it seems Celtics fans will be wondering some more.

“I’m still trying to figure it out. I’m still going through the rehab progression,” Tatum said. “I’m not saying I’m coming back or not. It’s all about being healthy and going through the plan.”

“I feel a little better today than I did yesterday — physically, conditioning, believing, every day I feel a little better,” Tatum continued. “More conditioning, more live stuff. Getting used to 5-on-5 and contact.”

During last season’s playoffs, Tatum averaged 28.1 points, 11.5 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.1 steals on 42.3 percent shooting from the field, 37.2 percent from the 3-point line and 88.9 percent from the free throw line.

In Tatum’s absence, the Celtics have actually surprised many as one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Jaylen Brown is having an MVP-caliber season, and the Celtics recently addressed their major issues in the Nikola Vucevic trade. The team is currently 34-19 and ranked 3rd in the East standings.
