JB Bickerstaff puts Cade Cunningham in Dwayne Wade territory

With Cade Cunningham leads Detroit Pistons to best record in the NBA at the All-Star break, it caused the point guard to garner a lot of attention for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. As it is A Pistons star in Cunningham is looking to pick up the torch as one of the game’s elite, head coach JB Bickerstaff draws a huge comparison between himself and Dwiane Wade.

Bickerstaff was on the “Road Trippin’ podcast” where he talked about Cunningham and how he continues to impress him this season. The closest comparison he could imagine that the Miami Heat legend was in Wadefor the specific reason of making circus shots and bringing that “wow” factor.

“Like one night you’ll see something, you’ll be like, ‘Damn that boy is cold.’ And then you see something a week later, you’re like, ‘Damn.’ It’s one of those things where I always compare it. I remember as Dwayne Wade, right? Like when Dwyane Wade became the Flash, like I remember specifically that year when he kind of dropped back and just threw the ball over his head and it just went in,” Bickerstaff said.

Another comparison he made was to the 1999 film The Matrix, where the main character Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, is considered “the one” and Bickerstaff mentions how Cunningham sees himself.

“It’s like Cade is at that stage now where he just believes he’s different. You and I laughed at The Matrix, right? When Neo believed he was the one. Like Cade believes he’s the one now and it’s like his acting translates that,” Bickerstaff said.

Bickerstaff also believes that if the season ended today, he would be the league’s MVP.

Cunningham is averaging 25.3 points, 9.6 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range. He helped Detroit to a 40-13 record, putting them in first place in the Eastern Conference, as the first game after the All-Star break is Thursday night against the New York Knicks.
