JB Bickerstaff sets historic mark with crucial win against Rockets

The Detroit Pistons made an impressive comeback, earning his first win of the regular season in a 115-111 victory over the Houston Rockets. The chippy matchup it went in the Pistons’ favor after they missed Wednesday’s season opener against the Chicago Bulls. Detroit also helped make history for head coach JB Bickerstaff as he earned his 300th career win.

Bickerstaff began his second season as the lead voice for the Pistons. Their win on Friday night showed a true testament to the gritty style of play that Bickerstaff is looking to establish as the foundation of the franchise. Bickerstaff was proud of his team’s resilience and competitive nature in their away win against Houston.

“I think our guys lived up to our motto for the season. What we want to do is control the chaos, and I think that’s what you saw out there on the floor,” Bickerstaff said during the Pistons’ postgame media session. “There were times last year where things got a little cloudy and we let our emotions get the better of us. I think we did a phenomenal job tonight when things got messy, we didn’t back down or back down. We kept our composure and were able to execute.”

All-Star play Cade Cunningham he finished the night with a near triple-double in the game-winning effort. He led the Pistons with 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Detroit’s franchise leader helped put the game on the ice, knocking down two huge free throws with five seconds left to give the Pistons a four-point lead.

Forward Ausar Thompson he scored a season-high 19 points against his twin brother Amen Thompson. He had an efficient night, hitting 9 of 16 shots, including a sure-fire 3-pointer in the second half.

Guard Duncan Robinson rebounded dramatically with an impressive 17 points. Robinson made his offseason debut against the Bulls scoring just two points in 32 minutes. The Pistons kept him involved offensively, making 5-of-9 attempts from the field and 4-of-8 from three.

Breakout performance by the Pistons Paul Reed

One of the most underrated veterans on the Pistons roster was big man Paul Reed. Detroit entered the matchup with a shortened roster without Jaden Ivey, Marcus Sasser and Caris LeVert due to injuries. The trouble started when the Pistons lost key frontcourt depth, and Reid was the main X-factor in their victory.

Center Jalen Duren was ejected for a physical fight with Amen Thompson. The Pistons also lost reserve center Isaiah Stewart and forward Ron Holland in the fourth quarter when both fouled out.

Reed has slipped seamlessly into the offense and defense. The 26-year-old forward scored 13 points on 6-10 shooting. However, his most important contribution came from guarding All-Star center Alperen Sengun late in the fourth quarter. He forced two key turnovers by Sengun to help the Pistons put up big baskets on the other end.

Reed’s teammates praised his efforts in the win. Thompson called Reed “the toughest man” he ever met after the game was over, via Anthony on X, formerly Twitter. Cunningham said the Pistons couldn’t have won that game no effort from their backup big manvia Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press.
