Jeanie Buss says her father would approve of selling the Lakers

Jeanie BussIn October 2025, sale Lakers there is Mark Walter officially confirmed by the NBA45 years after the arrival of Jerry Bass at the head of “Purple & Gold”. And after Jeanie Busshis father would approve the sale.

“What was important to him was that the Lakers stay at the top of the NBA, but to stay at the top, you need resources. she explains to CNBC. “You need everybody pulling in the same direction. That’s what he would want for the Lakers because the Lakers are his legacy.”

When he died in 2013, Jerry Bass ensured that 66% of the franchise’s shares were distributed among his six children. Finally, they agreed to sell 50% of the franchise to Mark Walter, for five billion dollars (since the franchise as a whole is valued at ten billion dollars), allowing each of them, according to ESPN’s calculations, to recoup $500 million after taxes!

Buss sibling division

Except that when Mark Walter bought the Lakers, the Buss siblings were kicked out one by one, only Jeanie Buss still had a role in the organizational chart of the Los Angeles franchise. If, officially, these dismissals were ordered by Mark Walter and Joe McCormack, who was in charge of the financial side of the Lakers, ESPN reported January so that the story would be a little different.

The Lakers CEO assures that Jeanie Buss actually fired her entire entourage. His sister, Janie Buss, also pointed out that her father would not have been happy if things had ended this way.

Jeanie Buss therefore used her CNBC interview to respond: “My siblings were involved in this decision (to sell). When it comes to the size of the Lakers and the expectations of the fans, you need resources and direction. When it comes to my family, we all have different opinions and lead our lives separately. This decision was the best for the six of us.”

For her part, Ginny Bass has signed a five-year contract with Mark Walter to remain as daily chairman. And take advantage of this new articulated sports stage around Luka Dončić put the Lakers back on top?
